Kindergarten FAQ

The decision about what to do for your child when they are eligible to start Kindergarten is a tough choice for many parents. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to gather all the information possible in order to make an informed decision about what is best for you and your child. We have put together the following question and answer information to help assist you in this decision making process. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to discuss them directly with your centre's supervisor.

Q. Is Kindergarten mandatory in the school system?

A. No. Children are not required to start school until Grade One.

Q. Can my child remain at Peekaboo for Kindergarten?

A. Yes. Peekaboo offers a full Junior and Senior Kindergarten program that meets or exceeds what is offered in the school systems.

Q. Why should children attend Kindergarten?

A. Kindergarten is a wonderful experience for most children. Four and five year olds are capable of forming strong friendships and are hungry to learn more about the world around them. For many children, who have not been in a group care setting, Kindergarten also gives them their first experience functioning in a large group. In addition to academics, Kindergarten is also a time to learn skills such as listening, following teacher's instructions, and working cooperatively and productively in a group setting. All of which will be extremely beneficial in the years to come.

Q. What are my choices for Kindergarten Programs?

A. Unlike when your child was in preschool there are many more options for parents and children when they reach Kindergarten. Public and Separate school boards, private schools, and child care centres all offer Kindergarten programs.

Q. What types of programs are offered in the school system and at Peekaboo?

A. The school systems are offering a 2.5 hour morning or afternoon program. At Peekaboo we integrate the academic Kindergarten curriculum into a full day program. We can provide your child with a comprehensive developmentally appropriate program that meets all of their needs from one set of teachers and caregivers. A full day integrated program also eliminates traveling and scheduling issues involved with a half-day program.

Q. What are the ratios and teacher qualifications in both programs?

A. The ratios in the schools system are approximately 1 - 24 and at Peekaboo they are 1 - 10 for JK or combined JK/SK and 1- 12 for SK programs.

School board teachers normally have a BA in education. Unfortunately, this education does not normally include extensive training on the development of 4 and 5 year olds. School board teachers are not normally given a choice of age group with which they would like to work.

At Peekaboo both teachers in all our Kindergarten programs have an Early Childhood Education diploma. This training deals extensively with the development, education and behavior of children under six years old. Our Kindergarten teacher have chosen this age group because they feel it is an age where they can make a difference.

Q. Is the academic program in the schools and at Peekaboo similar?

A. For years parents have acknowledged the nurturing and educational value of the Kindergarten programs offered at Peekaboo. We are now being given the opportunity to have this recognition extended to include the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. We are in the process of having our Kindergarten programs recognized as an eligible independent school. Under this process our academic program will be evaluated to ensure that it meets the requirements of a Kindergarten program. The education your child receives at Peekaboo will be equal, and in our opinion superior, to that of the school systems.

Q. Will I receive an evaluation of my child's progress?

A. Yes. Peekaboo will provide you with a written evaluation as well as a private parent/teacher interview twice a year. Daily communication between parents and educators will make sure that you are always aware of your child's progress and any potential concerns. Our teachers spend a great deal of time with your child in a low ratio setting, really getting to know them and their capabilities.

Q. Why should my child stay at Peekaboo for Kindergarten?

A. Seamless days! Better ratios! Highly qualified staff! No busing or scheduling issues! Recognized Kindergarten programs! Nurturing and educational needs all met in one place! Tax benefits! The same great Peekaboo Quality!

Q. Can I talk to other parents at Peekaboo about their experiences both at Peekaboo and in the school system?

A. Yes. Please ask your centre's supervisor to recommend parents with whom you can speak. There is no better reference than one based on experience in the school system. Also plan to attend our annual Kindergarten information session in May or June each year.
